Deer Valley Resort participates in Blue Sky wind power program

As part of its continuing environmental efforts, Deer Valley Resort has agreed to participate in Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky renewable energy program and also to engage in other energy efficiency practices. Deer Valley Resort is purchasing 1,050 blocks of Blue Sky in support of Park City’s Blue Sky Challenge, which puts them at the program’s Visionary level.

The Blue Sky Challenge is a citywide effort, to encourage Park City residents and businesses to support renewable wind energy by purchasing blocks of Blue Sky energy from Rocky Mountain Power.  Obviously, by virtue of the fact that we are a ski resort in the mountains with multiple buildings, we affect the local environment,” said Bob Wheaton, Deer Valley Resort’s president and general manager. “But we take our responsibility as stewards of the land very seriously. We are engaged in many environmental efforts, such as revegetation, reseeding, implementing a comprehensive Forest Service management plan, monitoring and testing downstream water discharge, preserving open space within new resort development and substantial recycling efforts. “We also have learned about Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program and embrace the concept whole-heartedly.”

Blue Sky gives customers a way to grow the demand for wind energy and take advantage of its environmental benefits. Deer Valley is buying renewables under the Blue Sky QS (Quantity Savings) program.

Blue Sky QS allows business customers to buy renewable energy from Rocky Mountain Power for less, providing they purchase at least 101 blocks of Blue Sky per month for a year.

Blue Sky also is sold in 100-kilowatt-hour block increments for $1.95 each, in addition to a customer’s regular monthly electric bill. Purchasing one block of Blue Sky energy over a period of a year has the same environmental benefit of either not driving 2,500 miles or planting a half acre of trees.
