SALT LAKE CITY — The PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning, the charitable arm of Utah Power, has awarded a total of more than
$84,000 to nonprofit organizations throughout the state, to help support health, welfare and social service programs. The
contributions are part of one of four grant cycles awarded by the Foundation annually.
“Education is the best prevention for many health and social ills,” said Rich Walje, Utah Power executive vice president and
chair of the Foundation’s evaluation committee. “This infusion of funding will aid organizations in providing quality health-related
educational programs and social services for adults, children and families throughout Utah.”
The largest grants included $12,000 to the Huntsman Cancer Institute; $10,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Salt
Lake; $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Valley; $7,500 to The Road Home; and $7,500 to the YWCA of Salt Lake City.
The following Utah organizations will receive contributions from the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning’s Utah Power Fund:
Huntsman Cancer Institute, Salt Lake City – $12,000 contribution will help support the Huntsman Cancer Learning Center, a community service that provides
patients and the public with access to current, easy to understand information about cancer in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake, Salt Lake City – $10,000 contribution will help support Project Learn, a nationally recognized program to improve students’
academic skills.
The Road Home, Salt Lake City – $7,500 contribution will assist the Road Home’s Children’s Program to provide children staying at the
shelter with the best quality living, educational and social experience possible; while providing parents with needed time
to work on improving their families’ living conditions.
YWCA of Salt Lake City– $7,500 contribution will help provide a 12-week course on healthy life choices for at-risk women and teens; designed to
empower participants through education to prevent domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and teen pregnancy.
Utah AIDS Foundation, Salt Lake City – $5,000 contribution will assist in providing new materials for the Utah AIDS Foundation’s Research Center,
which provides easy access to digital and print information regarding HIV/AIDS and other health issues.
Utah Federation for Youth Inc., Salt Lake City – $5,000 contribution will help support the Communities That Care® prevention planning component of the
South Salt Lake Community Coalition to Reduce Substance Abuse Program. The program addresses individual, family, school and
community issues related to substance abuse.
Boys and Girls Clubs of South Valley, Murray – $10,000 contribution will help support the adult education and early intervention components of the Family Services
Education Program.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, Murray – Funding will help provide additional adult mentors for children in the school-based mentoring program.
Family Support Center, Midvale– $5,000 contribution will help provide support for LifeStart Village, a two-year comprehensive educational and life
skills training program to help single women with young children develop self-sufficiency.
Your Community Connection of Ogden/Northern Utah, Ogden – $5,000 contribution will help provide classes for Spanish-speaking domestic violence support groups on topics including
parenting, defining domestic violence and identifying stages and cycles in abusive relationships.
Prevent Child Abuse Utah-Ogden– Funding will help provide child abuse prevention training for educators, child care providers, clergy and the general public.
Common Ground Outdoor Adventures, Logan – Funding will help provide special education students in Cache County and Preston, Idaho with the opportunity to
participate in adaptive cycling clinics, using state of the art equipment which allows people of all abilities to learn how
to ride a bike.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Utah County, Provo – $5,000 contribution will help support the homework assistance and tutoring lab components of the Power Math Program.
New Horizons Crisis Center, Richfield – Funding will assist in providing shelter services for homeless persons and victims of domestic violence, rape
and sexual assault, and their children. The Center serves residents of Sevier, Sanpete, Wayne, Piute and Millard Counties.
Additionally, the PacifiCorp Foundation awarded a community capital project grant of $5,000 to aid with the restoration of
Gunnison’s historic Casino Star Theatre.
