Scuba-diving attorney supports Blue Sky’s positive impact

SALT LAKE CITY — According to Fred Silvester, a trial attorney and principal at Silvester & Conroy L.C., one only has to look below the surface to see the impact of global warming.

“As a scuba diver, I have seen the devastation to reefs throughout the world from increased ocean temperatures, so I contribute to causes which might have a positive effect on the health of the oceans,” Silvester said. “Buying Blue Sky renewable power is something I can do to help offset greenhouse-gas emissions.”

Silvester & Conroy, located at 1371 East 2100 South in Salt Lake City, is making a big difference by purchasing 50 blocks (or 50,000 kilowatt-hours) of Blue Sky from Rocky Mountain Power each month. During the course of a year, Silvester & Conroy’s purchase provides environmental benefits equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 60 tons, which is equal to planting 24 acres of trees or not driving 128,500 miles.

“The more we can promote the use and development of wind power in the region, the better it will be for the environment and our energy future,” said Sarah Wright, executive director of Utah Clean Energy, a public interest group advocating for renewable energy. “Buying Blue Sky is an easy way for Utahns to make a personal statement in support of clean and sustainable energy.”

Rocky Mountain Power is buying the clean energy from wind farms such as the Pleasant Valley Wind Project, located in Evanston, Wyo. While Rocky Mountain Power already buys renewable power for its customers, Blue Sky is a way to bring even more into the system. Enrollment is optional and customers can increase their participation or withdraw at any time.

Blue Sky is one of the most popular green-power programs in the country, ranking second in the nation for the number of customers enrolled. In Utah, more than 18,200 residential and business customers buy renewable energy through the program. More than 46,500 customers buy Blue Sky in the Western United States. Blue Sky enables customers to help bring more renewable energy into the region; and energy generated from wind, biomass, solar and geothermal helps reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

Businesses have two renewable options: Rocky Mountain Power’s standard Blue Sky Block offering and Blue Sky Quantity Savings. Blue Sky Quantity Savings allows large-business customers to buy renewable energy from Rocky Mountain Power for less, providing they purchase at least 101 blocks of Blue Sky per month for a year.
