Reading Your Meter

We can help you better track your usage
Reading your meter is one of the best ways to keep track of your energy usage. Recording this information can help you find out which days you use the most energy, so you can make adjustments and save money. These simple steps show you how.

  1. For best results, try to read your meter about the same time each day so that you are comparing equal periods, giving you a true idea of your daily usage.

  2. Read the dials from right to left. When the dial is between two numbers, choose the smaller number. If the dial appears to be directly on a number ("6" for example), look at the dial to the right. If that dial has passed "0", "6"is the correct reading. If it has not passed zero, "5" is the correct reading.
  3. Now read the number back left to right. In the example above, the correct reading is 46372.
  4. To determine the number of kwh used in the last 24-hour period, subtract the last day’s meter total from the current day’s reading.
  5. Recording this information daily can help you find out which days your home uses the most energy. You then can evaluate your activities and habits to reduce energy usage.

Other meter reading tips
We need access to read your meter, it is a requirement of service and also leads to accurate bills for you as a customer. If our meter reader is unable to access your meter, he or she has to estimate your electric usage when we bill. By working together we can provide our meter readers with safe access to your meter, and give you an accurate electric bill. Here are some ways you can help:

  • Trim shrubs or trees for a clear view and path to your meter.
  • Keep your dog leashed on meter-reading day. Call us at 1-888-221-7070 for a copy of the meter-reading schedule in your area.
  • If you keep your gate locked, please contact us to work out a solution for access. We can secure your keys or lock combinations and/or utilize our own locks in many cases.
  • Shovel snow off of walkways and away from gates.
  • Be sure your meter is built on the outside of your house. Meters enclosed in garages or other buildings restrict access, and they violate our service requirements.
