SALT LAKE CITY – Canyon Bicycles of Salt Lake is adding wind to pedal power by purchasing Blue Sky renewable energy from Rocky
Mountain Power. Located at 3969 South Wasatch Blvd., owner Mike Hanseen says that clean energy is reducing the shop’s impact
on the environment.
“We’ve been in business for 11 years,” said Hanseen. “I was told that switching to wind power would reduce our carbon dioxide
footprint by nearly 22 tons each year. I was amazed that we even created that much in a lifetime.”
In addition to promoting pedaling to work instead of driving cars, Canyon Bicycles is buying 18 blocks of Blue Sky wind energy
per month. This offsets 21.6 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, which has the environmental benefit of planting eight
acres of trees or not driving 46,278 miles.
Rocky Mountain Power's Blue Sky program gives both residential and business customers a way to increase the demand for clean,
renewable wind energy and to take advantage of its environmental benefits. It is sold in 100 kilowatt-hour increments, called
blocks, for $1.95 per block per month in addition to a customer's regular bill.
“I bought Blue Sky because it makes perfect sense for global health,” explained Hanseen. “Overall, the feedback has been positive.
I have had several customers ask about my wind power plaque, and most have said they love the idea.”
Wind is an attractive form of energy generation because it helps reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Just one block of Blue Sky
has the same environmental benefit of either planting about a half acre of trees or not driving 2,500 miles. Enrollment is
optional, and customers can increase their participation or withdraw at any time.
“We have carved a niche business around the bicycle-fitting technique I developed over the past 13 years,” Hanseen said. “Our
goal is ‘every bike fits.’ Customer service is very important so any bike we sell gets a year of free service.”
Canyon Bicycles deals in higher-end models – $3,000 and higher, with many reaching $10,000. It features Seven Cycles models,
considered to be one of the world’s finest and largest custom titanium bicycle manufacturers. For more information on Canyon
